What a finish at the Aramco LIV Golf Singapore, it had our golfing hearts racing! The course was ablaze, nerves were frayed, and in the end, none other than Bryson DeChambeau clinched the victory in a sudden-death playoff against Wild Card Richard T. Lee. What an emotional rollercoaster!
“Unbelievable relief,” DeChambeau exclaimed after his triumph. “I haven't secured a win in four rounds since the 2024 U.S. Open! To be able to triumph here on this brutal course, which demands absolute precision on every shot under varying conditions – I couldn't be happier for my team!”
DeChambeau, the “Mad Scientist” of golf, started the final round one stroke behind co-leaders Joaquin Niemann and Lee Westwood. But the machine delivered a 5-under-par 66 on the wet course, despite several rain delays – and secured the pot! DeChambeau played the first three holes even par. Niemann, however, immediately carded two consecutive birdies on holes 1 and 2, extending his lead to a solid three strokes over DeChambeau and two over Westwood. Things were really heating up on the course! But then came hole 4, a par 5, and DeChambeau hit the turbo! He holed out directly from the greenside bunker for an eagle – what a statement! After a bogey on the 5th, birdies followed on holes 8 and 9. Then came the horn: an almost two-hour weather delay brought play to a halt. At this point, Niemann still held a two-stroke lead.
After the enforced break, Niemann’s momentum seemed to vanish. DeChambeau and Lee, however, seized the opportunity cold as ice. DeChambeau played the back nine bogey-free at 2-under-par, and Lee even posted a bogey-free 4-under-par. Niemann, on the other hand, struggled to the finish – the defending champion produced three bogeys after the break without a single birdie in reply. Ouch! Lee’s final birdie on the par-5 18th gave him the sole lead at 14-under-par. But Bryson DeChambeau matched it! This led to a “David vs. Goliath” showdown in a winner-take-all playoff. And what drama! DeChambeau pulled his tee shot into the water, but incredibly managed a sensational up-and-down for a “clutch” par. Lee had a putt from about 10 feet (3 meters) for birdie, but it sailed past – a shocking three-putt handed DeChambeau the victory. Unbelievable!
“I felt absolutely terrible for Richard,” DeChambeau confessed after Lee’s short miss. “He played incredibly good golf. He has beaten me in some of our rounds, and he is an outstanding player. I would have liked to play one more hole with him. As great as the win is, I have immense respect for Richard and the way he hits his ball on t
