Stephan Jaeger's T4 at the Baycurrent Classic is more than just a top result – it's a statement. In Yokohama, the German secured a tied fourth place with 201 strokes, which is 12 under par. He finished only three strokes behind the winner Michael Brennan, demonstrating his ability to compete among the world's elite.
What Happened in Yokohama? A Strengths Analysis
This T4 didn't come out of nowhere, and the Strokes Gained (SG) metrics speak volumes. Jaeger earned this strong finish by making significant gains, especially on the greens and with his approach shots.
A look at the numbers, compared to his 24-month baseline, reveals where the progress was made:
| Category | Tournament SG (per round) | 24-Month Baseline | Delta (Tournament vs. Baseline) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SG Total | +1.80 | +0.38 | +1.42 |
| SG: Off the Tee | -0.00 | -0.41 | +0.41 |
| SG: Approach | +0.57 | +0.24 | +0.33 |
| SG: Around Green | +0.45 | +0.32 | +0.13 |
| SG: Putting | +0.78 | +0.23 | +0.55 |
| SG: Tee to Green | +1.02 | (N/A) |
The putter was the secret weapon: With +0.78 strokes gained per round on the greens, Jaeger pulverized his baseline of +0.23. That's a jump of more than half a stroke per round – a game-changer! His approach shots to the green were also very strong at +0.57, well above his average. Even around the green, he improved.
And then the drive: Normally, Jaeger loses strokes Off the Tee (-0.41), but in Yokohama, he played at par in this category (-0.00). This is a tremendous gain and laid the foundation for many good scores. Overall, his Tee to Green game was extremely solid at +1.02 strokes per round.
When the Putter Saves the Day: Round 4 Under the Microscope
Jaeger started the tournament cautiously with a 69 (-2), but then followed up with a spectacular round of 65 strokes (-6) in Round 2 and a 67 (-4) in Round 3. This performance was not only strong, but it also propelled him up the leaderboard. While he was six strokes behind the leader after Round 1, that gap narrowed to just three strokes after Round 2. Before the final round, he was lurking just one stroke behind the lead – the eagle-hunter was chasing victory!
However, the final day, his round of 70 (-1), was a prime example of how the putter can save an otherwise shaky day. While his tournament average Off the Tee was +0.00, Jaeger lost a significant -1.55 strokes in this category in Round 4. Even around the green, he perf
