Hye-Jin Choi defended her lead at the Buick LPGA Shanghai, but Friday on the course was anything but a walk in the park. Despite a challenging 2-over 74, the Korean holds the top spot at a total of 6-under 138. A two-shot lead still separates her from Amy Yang and Grace Kim.
After a truly spectacular opening round, a flawless 8-under 64, the second day was a real struggle. Choi carded two birdies but also had to contend with four bogeys. Her ball-striking remained very strong – she missed only one fairway and three greens. But 38 putts? Even the best precision from the tee couldn't help much there.
Battle on the Shanghai Course
Chasers Amy Yang (71) and Grace Kim (72) seized the opportunity to catch up to 4-under 140. The Sheshan International Golf Club, hosting the tournament for the first time, gave the ladies a tough time. Long par-4s and small, heavily undulated greens ensured that few players came into the clubhouse under par. The conditions took their toll, and the entire field struggled.
Hunt for the First Title
For Hye-Jin Choi, a lot is at stake in Shanghai: She is chasing her first LPGA Tour title. Although she has already secured twelve victories in South Korea, her big breakthrough on the US-based tour is still pending. Even reigning champion Jeeno Thitikul, who triumphed here in 2025, is in the mix with a 73 and is lurking in seventh place, four strokes behind Choi. The weekend promises pure drama, whether Choi gets her putting back on track or the chasers seize the chance to turn the tables.
