Chacarra: Driver Drama! Race to Dubai Lead in Danger?

In the midst of the Race to Dubai showdown, Eugenio Chacarra's driver disintegrated – and that, of all times, right before a crucial tee shot at the 2026 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. What equipment drama for the leader in the race for the Harry Vardon Trophy! His trusty club, which had reliably served him since February, gave up the ghost on Wednesday during the Pro-Am at the sixth hole.

It was clear: a replacement was needed, quickly and under pressure. Chacarra was forced to resort to an unfamiliar club, which had noticeably more loft and produced a completely new ball flight. The result in the first round? The first nine fairways were for the birds, but a true golfer doesn't give up: With four birdies on the back nine, he still salvaged a 2-under 70. Quite impressive, considering the challenge he faced with his club.

Race to Dubai in the Crosshairs

The race for the Race to Dubai title is far from over. Chacarra entered the tournament with 4,143.89 points, 669.27 points ahead of Patrick Reed and a solid 999.03 ahead of Rory McIlroy, but Abu Dhabi still awards 9,000 points. Next week, the DP World Tour Championship offers a tempting 12,000 points. Every shot counts, every decision on the tee is worth its weight in gold.

The Nerve-Wracking Finale

Interestingly, the competition also didn't have a flawless run. While Chacarra and McIlroy both carded a 70, Patrick Reed finished his round with a double bogey, recording a 74. Francesco Laporta, however, set the pace with a sensational round of 62. Chacarra's driver issue didn't truly tank his standing after round one, but it remains a ticking time bomb for the upcoming high-stakes events. Without a launch monitor, he'll have to keep tinkering to find the setup that gets him to his goal.
