What a nail-biting drama to end the season! The FedExCup Playoffs have really heated up this week, and the chase for the coveted top-50 spots for the BMW Championship is in full swing. After 54 holes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the field has been severely narrowed, and now every shot counts to stay in the race and qualify not only for the next event, but also for the 2027 Signature Events.
Just barely on the safe side, though with their backs against the wall, are Sahith Theegala (46th), Michael Brennan (47th), Eric Cole (48th), Keith Mitchell (49th), and Maverick McNealy (50th). They are all under immense pressure, as a horde of hungry wolves lurks right behind them.
The Chasing Pack Charges Ahead
The list of prominent players desperately trying to break in is long: Brian Harman (51st), Matt McCarty (52nd), Jordan Spieth (53rd), Max Homa (54th), and Harris English (55th) are the first five who have currently missed the cut-off. For them, it’s quite literally about their tour status next season. Brian Harman knows this all too well.
Sunday Showdown in Memphis
The BMW Championship is, as is well known, the second playoff event, before the top 30 head to East Lake for the season finale. The points weighting in the Playoffs is brutal and ensures that the cut line can shift right up to the very last putt. Especially the players at and around the cut line need to perform, otherwise the dream of the Tour Championship and the Signature Events for 2027 is shattered. Rory McIlroy will tee off in the final group, while Sungjae Im also plays in a prominent group. The big question is whether Im can hold onto his lead and whether one of the guys just outside the Top 50 can still make the impossible possible. This will be a must-watch finale!
