Westwood Counters McIlroy: LIV Pros Bring Value!

The golf world holds its breath: Lee Westwood has directly contradicted Rory McIlroy, reigniting the already heated debate surrounding the sporting value of LIV players. McIlroy had recently lashed out, questioning the value of LIV golfers, even suggesting their return to the PGA Tour would be difficult because the Tour was on "a really good run." Westwood's counter-attack was not long in coming and, typical of the Briton, was blunt and direct.

Westwood considered McIlroy's statements "not well thought out" and insists that LIV players indeed bring immense added value to tournaments. As clear proof, he cited the Alfred Dunhill Championship: Of the 26 or 27 sponsor invitations, an astounding 25 went to LIV players. This clearly shows that sponsors and organizers are eager to see these top pros on the tee.

Have a look how many Liv players are getting invites into tournaments on the DPWT in the next few months. This would suggest that those players do bring value to tournaments in the eyes of sponsors and promoters. I’m not sure how much simpler I can make this for you.

Old Wounds, New Skirmishes

This latest escalation is just the newest round in a long-simmering feud between McIlroy and Westwood, revolving around sanctions, player movements, and the future of professional golf. Westwood himself, who hasn't competed on the DP World Tour since January 2023 and last played the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2019, spoke on TNT Sports, live from LIV Golf Indianapolis. He competed there this week and delivered a really strong performance.

The Duel Continues

This is no longer just about a few shots on the green, but about tangible power dynamics and the commercial appeal of the players. While McIlroy sees the PGA Tour in a "really good spot" and branded LIV as "never good for the game," Westwood counters with hard facts and the argument that the attractiveness of LIV stars for tournaments is undeniable. As expected, opinions within the golf community are divided, and this war of words is in full swing.
