Wagner Demands FedEx Cup Reset: 'More Real Danger!'

The PGA Tour needs a radical overhaul before it completely loses its soul! Johnson Wagner, for one, is furious and demands that the FedEx Cup Playoffs be reset to zero at the start of the postseason. According to his harsh analysis, the current format has lost all "true excitement" and feels more like an extension of the regular season, where top stars can comfortably cruise to East Lake.

After the Wyndham Championship, Wagner could only shake his head: The only player to make it into the Top 70 through that event was Michael Brennan, who took the win. Back then, there used to be real excitement, the drama around the cutline, players flying in and out – that's what kept fans engaged. Wagner's main annoyance: The PGA Tour now pays out hefty prize money for the regular season; Scottie Scheffler alone collects a top bonus. If the whole thing is to be called playoffs, then even calibers like Scheffler and Rory McIlroy must perform from the postseason onwards, or they're out.

Radical Overhaul for the Tour?

Wagner is not alone in his demand. In 2026, the debate about format changes on the PGA Tour is heating up. Other golfers and commentators are also pushing for structural adjustments: more dramatic cuts, adjusted field sizes, and a revision of the Signature Event model. The Tour itself is already working on a major overhaul for 2028, which envisages a two-tiered system and a new calendar to further distinguish elite events from the rest of the schedule.

Playoff or Exhibition?

The bigger picture shows: The FedEx Cup has already adjusted its format recently, but apparently, that's not enough. It needs more nail-biting finishes, more drama on the green, and fewer predictable processions by the usual suspects. Otherwise, we risk that what defines playoffs – ruthless elimination – will end up being just a tired joke. Fans deserve real sport where every shot counts, and not just a bonus tournament for the already heavily rewarded top stars.
