Every year, Masters rookies flock wide-eyed to Augusta National. For many, that moment only truly sinks in during tournament week. How quickly they can process it and refocus on the competitive task ahead could make the difference between an encouraging and a lackluster result. Tom McKibbin had ample time to process his moment. Along with his Legion XIII teammate Tyrrell Hatton, McKibbin was already on a two-day scouting trip through Augusta National in late March, followed by a week of practice in Orlando, Florida, before heading back to Augusta. This was meant to help the 23-year-old Northern Irishman, making his first Masters start this week, settle his nerves. "It was really good to play the course a week before and sort of see what was needed, and get that 'pinch-me' moment out of the way early," McKibbin said. "Definitely very beneficial."
Veterans in the Field
It was also beneficial to practice alongside Hatton, who is making his 10th Masters start this week and has seemingly begun to unlock the secrets of Augusta National. His last two Masters (T9 in 2024, T14 last year) are his best finishes here. "It seems a bit crazy to say because I still feel and act like a kid, I think," Hatton said about reaching a double-digit number of starts. McKibbin can also rely on the knowledge of his captain Jon Rahm, the 2023 Masters champion. The three Legion XIII members are the only LIV Golf team with more than one representative in this week's field. Caleb Surratt, the 21-year-old and second-youngest player in the league, is the only teammate not present at Augusta National. "I think it speaks to the level of golf we all had before and after joining LIV," Rahm said about the Legion XIII trio. "The goal now would be to hopefully have all four of us in majors and say that we are all good enough to qualify and be there. It wouldn't surprise me if that happens in the near future."
🤩 @tommckibbin8 makes his Masters debut this week MCKIBBIN: "I think it's going to be something very special for me to play the Masters. It's the only major I haven't played yet, so it'll be nice to tick all four off." "I think this was the first major I ever watched on TV. I think I..."
Rookie Prospects at Augusta
The immediate future for McKibbin, of course, is to make an impression in his debut. Recent tournament history is favorable. Last year, two rookies finished in the Top 25. The year before, three players even made it into the Top 12, including Ludvig Aberg’s runner-up finish. If McKibbin can finish in the Top 12 this week, he secures an invitation to next year's Masters.
