
Ten miles per hour more clubhead speed – that sounds like a dream, but what does it really bring to the golf course with the new Titleist GTS Drivers? A recent analysis examines exactly this upgrade from 95 mph (153 km/h) to 105 mph (169 km/h) and the performance changes across the entire GTS series.
First, the good news: Every build tested got faster and longer. But beware, golfers: The magnitude of the gain varies greatly depending on the loft and model. It's simply not a one-size-fits-all upgrade.
Incredible Distance, But with a Catch
The Titleist GTS drivers showed that while more speed is generally good, lofts react differently. The 8-degree models averaged an impressive 41.8 yards (38.2 meters) more carry distance – truly powerful. For the 9-degree variants, it was still an impressive 39.3 yards (36.0 meters) additionally in the air. But be aware: Those who were already longest at 95 mph with a 10-degree loft only saw a gain of 33.4 yards (30.5 meters). So, the absolute king of distance is not automatically the biggest winner from the speed boost.
When Spin and Dispersion Take on a Life of Their Own
More speed does not automatically mean a straighter ball flight or optimized spin. On the contrary: For a 10-degree GTS 4, spin decreased by over 200 rpm, but seven of the nine tested GTS builds showed less favorable spin values at 105 mph, an average of 13 rpm more. And there was no automatic improvement in dispersion either. Only a single build, the GTS 4 with 10 degrees, became more precise. This shows: A driver that feels buttery smooth at 95 mph can suddenly reveal completely different characteristics at 105 mph, especially on off-center strikes.
The bottom line for every golfer is clear: higher swing speed is a game-changer, no question. But the best driver for you at 95 mph is not necessarily the best at 105 mph. This strikingly demonstrates the importance of a precise fitting to truly turn those extra miles per hour into an advantage on the course.
