The rumor mill is buzzing: Tiger Woods is reportedly seriously considering joining the PGA Tour Champions in 2027, while the senior circuit is already grappling with a much trickier question: What do we do with the LIV defectors? The potential for a golden era of senior golf sharply clashes with the eternal debate about loyalty and fairness.
Steven Alker, a champion on the Tour himself, revealed: there's "inside talk" that Woods really wants to compete in 2027. Turning 50 in December 2025, 'The Tiger' will be eligible to play, but an official plan is still pending. His name alone would bring the senior circuit an unprecedented level of attention – TV ratings, sponsors, everything would skyrocket. Players universally wish for the Tour's profile to become genuinely strong.
Woods Stir on the Senior Circuit
However, the excitement surrounding a potential Woods entry is overshadowed by a massive controversy: Are former LIV golfers who have now reached their 50th birthday allowed to play on the PGA Tour Champions? Alker emphasizes that opinions within the Player Advisory Council are 'very divided.' Some see players like Lee Westwood or Phil Mickelson as providing the necessary star power for the show, while others don't want to see the former defectors back on the tee box at all.
The LIV Dilemma of the Legends
The problem is further exacerbated by the current turmoil surrounding LIV Golf. Following the withdrawal of financial support from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the league is reportedly undergoing an insolvency-driven restructuring. Players like Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sergio Garcia are said to have already left LIV or have uncertain futures for 2027. Steve Stricker threw names like Ian Poulter, Pat Perez, and Henrik Stenson into the mix, suggesting they could be real 'hits' for the Champions Tour. The big question remains: Who is eligible to play, how long should any suspensions be, and are there differences if someone was out for six months or a full year? This is more than just a rules discussion – it's about the soul of golf.
