Thornton on 'Quadruple' Mission: GB&I Aims to Complete Team Title Collection
"There's no reason why we can't make it a Quadruple," is the battle cry from Simon Thornton, who, with his GB&I team, is chasing the next prestigious team title at the PGA Cup. After the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, and Walker Cup have already come to Europe in recent years, the PGA Cup could be the crown jewel of an unprecedented series of successes.
For Thornton himself, things are looking strong right now. As Captain of the PGA in Ireland and a four-time Irish PGA Championship winner, he brings not only considerable skill but also the necessary leadership experience to the tee. This tournament at The K Club marks his second PGA Cup experience, having suffered a narrow defeat in Foxhills in 2022. Now he's ready to rewrite history and make his 'Quadruple' vision a reality.
Showdown at The K Club: Match Play at the Highest Level
The PGA Cup is a showdown between the best PGA Members from Great Britain & Ireland and the US stars. A Ryder Cup in miniature, so to speak, to be held from October 2nd to 4th, 2026, at The K Club in Ireland. On the first two days, Friday and Saturday, the schedule features four Foursomes and four Four-Ball matches. Sunday will then feature ten thrilling Singles matches to determine who claims victory. To reclaim the trophy, GB&I needs 13.5 out of a total of 26 points – things will be fiercely contested on the greens.
The Chase for the Historic 'Quadruple'
This year, The K Club holds special significance, as it's the first time since 2005 that the tournament will be played on the South Course. Under the leadership of Captain David Scott and with players from all four home nations, the GB&I team is eager to achieve this historic triumph. Thornton is confident: This 'Quadruple' is within reach and would definitively cement the dominance of European teams in the international golf calendar.
