Shock at Colonial: Finau, Fowler, Im Miss the Cut!

The Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club delivered some truly big surprises this weekend, as the cut line was tougher than it's been since 1983 – and promptly caught some big names. Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, and Sungjae Im? All out of the competition after the second round on Friday separated the wheat from the chaff, with the cut line set at 2-under par.

The Relentless Cut Line Strikes

It was particularly tough for Rickie Fowler. After rounds of 70 and 73, he found himself at 3-over and missed the weekend. A true back-nine collapse on Friday was the turning point that knocked him out of contention. One wonders how you start a round with four birdies in six holes and then still give it all away.

Rickie Fowler is an enigma dude How are gonna gonna open with 4 birdies in 6 holes and then find a way to give it all back and miss the cut?

Tony Finau (Even Par after 70-70) and Sungjae Im (6-over) also had to pack their bags early. Even Keith Mitchell, who was actually still within range at 1-under (71-69), could no longer experience the weekend at Colonial. The extremely low cut line was the result of soft, calm scoring conditions that made the leaderboard so tight that even solid scores weren't enough.

Who Survived

While some stars faltered, others showed fighting spirit and secured their spot. Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Keegan Bradley, and Matt Kuchar are still in the competition and fighting for the win. Ludvig Åberg and defending champion Ben Griffin also made it past the tough cut line. That promises a truly exciting final in Fort Worth.
