Scottie Scheffler: "Wanting Too Much" in Presidents Cup?

"Sometimes I probably try too hard," mumbles Scottie Scheffler, who as world No. 1 should actually be used to everything coming easily to him on the green – but in match play, things are different for him. Ahead of the 2026 Presidents Cup, the exceptional golfer explained that his mixed record in team formats might also be due to his excessive self-demands. An interesting insight when even the stroke play dominator struggles with himself.

His match play stats speak volumes: 3-5-1 in the Presidents Cup and 3-6-3 overall in the Ryder Cup. That's far from the consistency Scheffler usually conjures on the fairways. Particularly striking: In Presidents Cup singles, he stands at 0-2, while in Ryder Cup singles, he is very strong at 2-0-1. This discrepancy shows how complex a champion's psyche can be when the pressure is on a different level and suddenly a partner is in the boat with them.

Scheffler's Match Play Enigma

The numbers clarify that Scheffler had more success in Presidents Cup Four-Balls, but Foursomes and singles matches haven't really suited him so far. In 2024, he and Russell Henley were 2-1 in the Presidents Cup before the duo struggled in the subsequent Ryder Cup. For many fans, it's a mystery how a player of his caliber can falter in the team format.

Captain Snedeker Unconcerned

But U.S. Captain Brandt Snedeker remains calm. For him, Scheffler's match play record is no cause for concern when it comes to teeing off. Scheffler himself sees a possible solution in consciously reducing his ambition: "It would definitely be important for me to simply try less." Easier said than done when you're used to always giving your all. How Team USA will perform at the 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club near Chicago remains to be seen – Scheffler will certainly give his all again, or perhaps "less."
