Scottie Scheffler: Rebound with Bogey-Free Back Nine at BMW

That was a statement: Scottie Scheffler delivered a true demonstration of mental strength at the 2026 BMW Championship, impressively fighting his way back after a shaky start. After a disappointing opening round, the US star made an impressive comeback with a flawless second nine and a sensational round.

At the start of the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, things weren't looking good for Scheffler, fresh off his dominant victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. A 2-over 72 in Round 1 dropped him far back to T44 in the 50-player field. It was an uncharacteristically bumpy start for the golfer who had been performing so strongly lately.

PGA TOUR

It is not going as planned for Scottie Scheffler. Last week’s @FedExChamp winner is off to a rocky start and currently sits T48 @BMWChamps.

Scheffler's Back-Nine Magic

But Scheffler is one of the greats for a reason. After another bogey on the 1st hole of the second round, the struggles seemed to continue. What happened next, however, was pure Scheffler: He carded four birdies on the first five holes of his back nine, with another following on the 17th. The result? A 5-under 65 and a completely bogey-free second nine that put him back within striking distance. Scheffler himself said the main difference was the back nine – he did a “good job fighting back.”

PGA TOUR Communications

Following a first-round 2-over 72, Scottie Scheffler rebounds with a 5-under 65 at the BMW Championship and currently sits T23. Scheffler ranked 47th of 50 players in Strokes Gained: Putting (-2.373) during the first round, compared to (currently) fifth (+1.962).

Back in the Race

He gained five strokes in that round, all on the final nine holes – a testament to his incredible resilience and fighting spirit. Scheffler climbed from T44 to T23, putting him fully back in contention for the weekend. In a FedEx Cup Playoff event where every shot counts, such a quick recovery is not only impressive but crucial. Scottie Scheffler proves: Even if the start is bumpy, his game is on, and his will to win is unbroken.
