Scheffler Solidifies World No. 1; Woods' Record Hunt Is On!

Tiger Woods’ eternal reign as golf’s World No. 1? Scottie Scheffler is serious about chasing the legendary streak of 281 weeks at the top. Currently, Scheffler holds an astounding 172 consecutive weeks as the world's top-ranked player – a milestone that seemed unthinkable just recently. If he maintains this pace, he could surpass Tiger on October 15, 2028, and snatch this historic record.

Scheffler: Dominance with Understatement

Scheffler loves the grueling work, the grind on the green, not the spotlight that comes with the No. 1 spot. A look at the current ranking from September 2, 2026, shows: After his triumph at the Tour Championship, he remains undisputed at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). This continuous hold on the No. 1 position is incredibly strong, leading even AI tools to speculate how long he could maintain the lead, even if he were to take an extended break. Things are simply going his way.

❓ Did you know Scottie Scheffler covered scoring-room camera with hat right after winning Tour Championship? He says loves grind of being golf's best, not spotlight it brings. He's now passed Tiger Woods career earnings and sits 110 weeks shy of his No. 1 streak record.

The Pursuit of Eternal Numbers

But golfers, be cautious: Even if the streak seems within reach, there's another dimension. Tiger Woods’ total time at the top of the world rankings stands at an incredible 683 weeks. Scheffler currently has "only" 207 weeks to his name. Catching him in this discipline would be a marathon that could last until October 2035 if he consistently remains No. 1. That's a completely different league and showcases the sheer dominance Woods once held.

Nevertheless, the current chase for consecutive weeks is what keeps us glued to our screens now. Every tee shot, every birdie chance, every holed putt counts. Scheffler's incredible consistency has suddenly made a once untouchable benchmark seem realistic.

Just asked @GeminiApp how long Scottie could go without playing at all and reasonably expect to remain #1 in OWGR. Something like nine months appears to be a good guess. That would take Scottie from ~170 consecutive weeks at #1 to ~210 weeks. Tiger's record is 281 weeks.
