Scheffler Chasing Record & Title at Tour Championship

Scottie Scheffler is on the verge of rewriting golf history – and breaking the PGA Tour career earnings record of an icon who has been on the throne for 26 years: Tiger Woods. A top-13 finish at the ongoing Tour Championship in East Lake would catapult the young American to first place. This would make Scheffler the new King of Cash, even if he doesn't win the event.

His path there has been a triumph of the highest order. Scheffler already secured victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, earning a hefty $3.6 million. Shortly after, he added another $426,000 for a 12th-place finish at the BMW Championship. Now he's just a few golf dollars shy of surpassing the $120,199,166 held by Woods since February 2000.

A Legacy Trembles

Tiger Woods' record has stood for an incredible 26 years, an eternity in professional sports. However, modern prize money is gigantic, which somewhat relativizes the mere pursuit of numbers. Rory McIlroy is also strongly in the running with $117.85 million, but still $3.15 million behind Woods. Scheffler himself remains cool, not wanting to call it a "Tiger record" because he knows the comparison is flawed due to inflation. A gentleman on the course, but ruthless when it comes to the cash.

Sunday's Showdown

On Saturday, Scheffler delivered a sensational round: a bogey-free 66, bringing him to 12-under 198. He is currently tied for third place, just three strokes behind leader Viktor Hovland. So, on Sunday, Scheffler is not only eager for the career earnings record but also for the Tour Championship title. Things are going well for him, and the golf world is watching with anticipation to see if the changing of the guard takes place today.
