The DP World Tour Play-Offs are losing their sparkle even before the first tee shot: Several Ryder Cup stars and reigning Open Champion Ryan Fox are opting out of the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, sending a clear statement about current priorities in professional golf. Robert MacIntyre, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, and Ludvig Åberg — a whole host of European top golfers — are missing from the start of the final phase. This significantly weakens the field and raises questions.
It's a list that stings: In addition to the aforementioned big names, Alex Fitzpatrick, Min Woo Lee, Si Woo Kim, and Ryan Gerard are also notably absent. Ryan Fox's withdrawal is particularly significant, especially after the New Zealander was announced for the event just last week. Officially, none of the players have confirmed their reasons for withdrawing, but speculation is rife – not least because MacIntyre and Matt Fitzpatrick had previously expressed concerns about traveling to the United Arab Emirates.
The Race to Dubai Under New Circumstances
The Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, held from November 5th to 8th at Yas Links, is typically the kickoff for the hot phase of the season. Here, the top 70 players on the Race to Dubai rankings compete for coveted spots in the final DP World Tour Championship in Dubai (November 12th to 15th), to which only the top 50 are admitted. However, the massive withdrawals have a fatal impact: the cut-off for Abu Dhabi has practically slipped to 80th place in the rankings.
What's even more dramatic: Players like Robert MacIntyre at 56th and Justin Rose at 69th would have urgently needed a really strong performance in Abu Dhabi to qualify for Dubai. Their absence underscores that the personal decision not to compete outweighs the pursuit of ranking points.
Who's Still Playing?
Despite the prominent cancellations, some absolute heavyweights are still set to play. Race to Dubai leader Eugenio Chacarra is expected, as are seven-time ranking winner Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed. The DP World Tour had, according to rumors, even considered alternative venues in Spain and Portugal, but Chief Executive Guy Kinnings emphasized that both play-off events would take place as planned in the UAE.
The picture is clear: The DP World Tour Play-Offs are starting in 2026 with a weakened field, while the absence of so many stars sends an unmistakable signal about priorities in global professional golf. The Tour must ask itself how it can make its key events more attractive to the biggest names in the future.
