In the end, Moa Svedenskiold claimed the victory, but the path to it was anything but ordinary.
Three players – Moa Svedenskiold, Beth Coulter, and amateur Lena Geier – had battled their way into the playoff at 5-over par. After the first extra hole, Lena Geier was eliminated, and it looked like a classic showdown between Svedenskiold and Coulter. On the second playoff hole, Svedenskiold made par, Coulter missed her putt and picked up her ball. The celebratory shouts were already approaching when the rules gods intervened.
Celebration Halted: The Rulebook Strikes
About ten minutes later, the bombshell dropped: an official penalized Svedenskiold two strokes for building an illegal stance in the bunker. Her par became a double-bogey.
