The PGA Tour is experiencing a true gold rush, as interest in the new elite series is skyrocketing – CEO Brian Rolapp himself confirms a veritable queue of sponsors. A total of 14 (!) potential partners are vying for the last four slots in the future "Championship Series," and the Tour can pick and choose to match the right brands with the fitting events. This is no longer just simple bidding; it's a real hype surrounding the future of golf.
This momentum is no coincidence, as Rolapp is completely overhauling the PGA Tour calendar for 2028. The new system envisions two clear tracks: the high-profile "Championship Series" with crème de la crème tournaments, and beneath it, the "Challenger Series," serving as a springboard for emerging talents. A radical cut that brings a breath of fresh air and apparently also makes the cash registers ring.
The Millions Game: New Partners, New Paths
Rumors suggest that the Tour is even considering a multi-sponsor model for the postseason. This means that 4-5 sponsors per year could each contribute between $10 and $15 million. A deal that would further strengthen the Tour's financial muscle and shows how much potential this new format holds. The "Championship Series" is not just a sporting game-changer, but a commercial one too.
Postseason 2028: The Big Restructure
Starting in 2028, the postseason finale will also be revamped. A thrilling two-part format is planned: First, a 72-hole stroke play showdown to determine the points race, followed by an intense match play format at the Tour Championship over the final two weeks. The BMW Championship will serve as the exciting stroke play opener before the top golfers advance to match play. This new system promises even more drama and unforgettable duels on the course. The East Lake Tour Championship, as we know it, will give way to a rotating concept that distributes elite events across various venues.
The PGA Tour is not only keeping pace with the times but actively shaping the future of professional golf. It remains to be seen which sponsors will secure the last coveted spots and what "epic rounds" we will experience on the newly structured Tour starting in 2028.
