Puerto Rico Open Sponsorship & Challenger Series 2028 Planned

The Puerto Rico Open not only secures a two-year sponsorship extension but also catapults itself directly into the PGA Tour's new Challenger Series starting in 2028. This is quite a statement and guarantees the event a firm place in the future golf universe.

According to insider reports, the tournament is expected to be a permanent fixture on the PGA Tour calendar as early as 2027. It will take over the previously "TBD" (To Be Determined) listed date from February 18-21, concurrent with the Genesis Invitational. Yesterday, Josh Carpenter of the Sports Business Journal already celebrated the Puerto Rico Open as the first event of the Challenger Series.

The Tour's New Structure

Starting in 2028, things get serious: The PGA Tour will then split into a Championship Series and a Challenger Series. The Challenger Series will comprise a total of 20 events. Of these, 13 will run concurrently with Championship Series tournaments and be broadcast on cable television, while the remaining 7 will be scheduled during Tour-free weeks and be available on free-to-air TV. The Puerto Rico Open is planned as one of the 13 cable events – a platform that should elevate the tournament to the next level.

A Look into the Future

This realignment is part of the Tour's larger plan to establish a promotion and relegation model. This will make the competition even more intense and dramatic. Even though the confirmation of the sponsorship extension and the Challenger Series placement is still pending, it's clear: something truly big is happening here that will change the PGA Tour forever. The cards are being reshuffled, golfers, and we're excited to see who ultimately triumphs.
