PGA Tour: Rory McIlroy's 15-Event Rule in Jeopardy?

The PGA Tour is overhauling its own rules – and Rory McIlroy is right in the eye of the storm. Apparently, the long-standing 15-event minimum for dual members is being put under review, a rule that currently separates Rory by a single start from the coveted primary tour status. This could completely reshuffle the cards for superstars like him.

This week, McIlroy is only teeing it up for his 14th PGA Tour event at East Lake, thus falling short of the required 15. Were there no change, as a non-member, he would only have seven sponsor exemptions per season in the future. Not a dramatic situation for the Irishman, but losing primary tour status would be a significant statement. Tour CEO Brian Rolapp has already held discussions with McIlroy and has the power to approve exceptions.

Rules Under the Microscope

The key issue: Rolapp himself describes the rule as "questionable" within the Tour's new competition model. This is no coincidence, as the PGA Tour is in the midst of a radical restructuring of its competitive framework, culminating in a new postseason model in 2028. An old rule that only affects dual members no longer fits this picture.

"It's questionable if it even has a place in our new competitive model...it's one of many rules we will look at" Brian Rolapp on Rory McIlroy coming up one event short of the 15-event minimum to maintain full-membership status on the PGA Tour.

The Tour's Major Rethink

The announcement of a new TOUR Championship in a match-play format starting in 2028 underscores that the Tour is completely resetting its incentives and participation requirements. The 15-event rule thus seems like a relic from another era. Even if the rule has not yet been officially scrapped, the fact that it is even being discussed is a strong signal that the PGA Tour is willing to bend – or even rewrite – its statutes for its biggest names.
