PGA Tour: Two-Week Match Play Showdown Set for 2028!

Starting in 2028, the PGA Tour is overhauling its finale, igniting a two-week match play fireworks display unlike anything the golf world has ever seen. Brian Rolapp, CEO of the Tour, dropped the bombshell on Tuesday – a game-changer designed to elevate the sport's popularity to a new level.

Instead of the usual stroke play sprint to the finish, we'll see a brutal knockout system. A full 32 top golfers, based on the final season standings, will compete for the crown. Week one features a group stage: eight groups of four players, who will face off in direct match play. The top two from each group? They advance.

In the second week, on a completely new course, the excitement truly begins. The remaining 16 pros enter a ruthless knockout mode. Whoever remains undefeated after four rounds will claim the Tour Championship victory. Rolapp puts it succinctly: "This is two-week match play, a chance to extend that moment and draw the full attention of golf and sports fans." He added it would be one of the toughest tournaments ever, "a test for the best golfers in the world, and in a completely new, unique way."

Until now, match play has been primarily associated with the Ryder Cup, but it has never been seen in the PGA Tour's postseason playoffs. Currently, the season concludes with three stroke play playoffs, which reduce the field to the final 30 players who then compete for the title in Atlanta over the weekend.

The news was immediately celebrated by Tiger Woods, who was on the committee for the reforms. "The season-ending finale should be worthy of the journey it takes to get there. Today’s announcement is the culmination of the hard work and passion of our players," Woods posted on social media, announcing he was "ushering in a new era of match play on the @PGATOUR."

Rory McIlroy, a six-time major winner, showed a more nuanced reaction. "It's definitely different. Two weeks, two different venues. But it's cool," McIlroy said at a press conference on Tuesday. "I think they've taken a big step, and conceptually, I really like it."

According to Rolapp's plans, there will still be an overall season stroke play champion, crowned at the end of the regular PGA TOUR Championship Series – "essentially identifying the best player in the world" – before the match play tournaments even begin. McIlroy emphasized that it's important that "the regular season champion is adequately rewarded after that final stroke play event, and then the TOUR Championship match play will be something completely different." He also noted, however, that it might be difficult for the 16 golfers who play all four rounds of the final weekend to maintain motivation if they are eliminated early. "It's going to be tough for some guys to play match play and to be playing for 14th place or something like that,"
