Rory McIlroy admits he developed "bad habits" with his swing – ironically, through excessive hours on the driving range while trying to rediscover his feel. The constant back-and-forth between tournament pressure and the urge to chase the perfect swing has apparently put the Northern Irishman in a difficult spot. However, he and his coaches in Florida are confident: they're heading in the right direction, even if the road is still long.
Especially in tough tournament play, the swing can quickly take a backseat. Rory knows this all too well, explaining that it's easy to fall back into old patterns. After recently noticing swing issues again, it was clear: "Some of that work again" – he had to get back to the technical fundamentals. According to McIlroy, this rebuild is a real "work in progress," and he has to "hit a lot of balls" to truly internalize the new feel.
Sweat, Caps & Swing Drills
That's the dilemma in professional sports: honing a change for three hours on the range and then executing it under tournament pressure – a real challenge. Rory relies on classic drills: a cap under his right arm and clubs with special grips are helping him feel the correct positions. It's truly a lot of hard work he's putting in with his coaches in Florida.
From High to Low Point
After a break at the end of 2024, McIlroy started 2025 very strongly, immediately securing three victories. However, these technical fundamentals now seem to be back on the agenda. His recent comments are no coincidence: at a recent tournament, he increasingly felt "lost with the golf swing." His recent Memphis performance showed significant rust, and he himself admitted that he needs to work hard to be competitive again. The work is ongoing, and Rory is determined to get his swing back on track.
