McIlroy Shares Riviera Lead; Rai Charges, Scheffler Falters.

Genesis Invitational: Rory Defies the Storm, Scheffler Struggles – and a Youngster Surprises!

Rory McIlroy showed what he's made of at the Genesis Invitational! The Northern Irishman defied torrential rain and gusting winds to post a superb round of five-under-par (66 strokes!) and secure a share of the lead. But watch out, golfers: Aaron Rai was already six-under through 16 holes before darkness brought an abrupt end to the spectacle. It was getting intense!

McIlroy, who last year claimed the career Grand Slam with a Masters triumph – yes, folks, that's how it's done! – carded six birdies and just one bogey. His five-under total wasn't alone in the clubhouse: 26-year-old American Jacob Bridgeman is also in the mix and shares the top spot.

After a nearly three-hour rain delay – the courses were practically flooded! – both came back very strong. When the downpour stopped, the wind picked up and reshuffled the deck.

Things went very differently for world number one Scottie Scheffler. As one of the late starters, he struggled; golfers know the feeling. Not a single birdie dropped; instead, he carded a double-bogey and three bogeys. The result: Five-over-par through 10 holes, putting him in a tie for last place as darkness fell. Ouch.

Meanwhile, for Aaron Rai from England: He was on fire! Already three-under through 12 holes, he added three more birdies on the 13th, 15th, and 16th, catapulting himself to the top of the leaderboard. He will hopefully continue that momentum on Friday when the round resumes. High drama!

Scheffler's tee time was delayed, but McIlroy started promptly and was already two-under through three holes. After the forced break, he sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the fourth hole, followed by a 19-foot birdie on the eighth, and another birdie on the par-5 11th. A true ball-striking artist, this Rory! A bogey on the 16th briefly dropped him from the lead, but Rory, as we know him, promptly responded with a birdie on the par-5 17th. Stay composed and carry on!

“I’ve definitely felt more comfortable playing in these conditions over the last few years, having improved my ball flight control,” McIlroy commented. “I’m starting to really enjoy this type of golf.” He continued: “Honestly, I haven’t always had the skills to excel in these conditions. The fact that I’m now starting to enjoy them and have the shots to succeed on days like these – that’s super satisfying. To be almost 20 years into a career and still feel like I’m improving in certain aspects of the game? That’s quite a statement!”

“Pretty tricky,” said McIlroy. The rain itself? Not a big deal for him. But when, at Riviera Country Club – this absolute classic in Pacific Palisades, where Rory had always come up empty-handed in eight previous starts –
