McIlroy: 63! Putter Ignites FedExCup Comeback

What an incredible round Rory McIlroy delivered on Saturday evening! The Northern Irishman fired a 7-under 63 in the third round of the Tour Championship at East Lake, making a spectacular return to the FedExCup race after a shaky start. The big secret: his putter finally caught fire, after remaining rather quiet over the first 36 holes.

McIlroy's phenomenal round featured a whopping nine birdies, even though two bogeys crept in. His finish was particularly strong, with birdies on holes 15, 16, and 17, which temporarily propelled him into a five-way tie for the lead. The PGA Tour reported a putting gain of almost four strokes – a statement that completely turned the tide. Rory himself said it was because he set himself up for easier putts, not due to his equipment.

Rory McIlroy: 63 today ties his career low round at East Lake; also shot 63 Saturday in 2022 when he won. McIlroy gained more than 3 strokes putting on his last 7 holes of the round.

Rory's Putter Explosion

Until Saturday, it seemed as if McIlroy would merely be an observer at this year's grand finale in Atlanta. But with this magical 63, which, by the way, equals his career-best performance at East Lake (as he did in 2022 when he won the title), the fight for the FedExCup is fully ignited again, and Rory is back in contention. He now stands at 10-under-par and has moved within striking distance of co-leaders Viktor Hovland and Ryan Gerard.

Sunday Showdown

The leaderboard is incredibly tight after Moving Day, and Rory is back in the mix with this surge. After two rounds, he had seemed almost out of contention, but his putter pulled him out of the shadows and turned this Saturday into 'Rory Day'. It's going to be a real battle on the green on Sunday, as the title and hefty prize money are up for grabs. We are excited to see if McIlroy can continue his run.
