The dream of a Major is tough, and the U.S. Open Final Qualifiers have proven it once again: pure drama, narrow decisions, and old heroes striking back – or failing.
This week, things really heated up in Dallas and Walton Heath to secure the last coveted spots for Shinnecock Hills. Right in the thick of it: Graeme McDowell, an old acquaintance making a comeback after a break, and an absolute debutant who surprised the golf world.
G-Mac's Resounding Comeback
Graeme McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open champion, has actually done it! He hadn't been in the field since 2020, but at the Dallas Athletic Club, he proved he still has what it takes. With a strong T5 finish and 4-under par (69-69=138), G-Mac secured his spot at Shinnecock Hills. A true statement that shows you can never write off a champion.
A Debutant Steals the Show
While nine qualifiers punched their ticket in Dallas, Nathan Kimsey made headlines in England. At the Final Qualifier in Walton Heath, he played one stellar round after another and triumphed with an incredible 14-under par (68-62=130). For Kimsey, it's his first Major Championship ever and thus his U.S. Open debut – what a story!
