LIV Golf: The Decline of the Rival League.

LIV Golf is officially over – at a court hearing in New Jersey on November 5, 2026, the league's lawyers declared they would abandon the planned 'LIV 2.0' restructuring and instead initiate liquidation. A bitter end for a project that kept the golf world on edge for years and thoroughly shook up its power structures. Without Saudi funds and sufficient player commitments, it was all over.

The Great Bluff?

What began with a bang in June 2022, when LIV shook up the scene at its first event at the Centurion Club near London with absurdly high guarantees and $20 million in prize money per tournament, is now history. Players like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Phil Mickelson were enticed, later joined by Jon Rahm. The PGA Tour responded with bans, lawsuits flew back and forth – the battle for supremacy on the green had begun. A year later, in June 2023, peace seemed within reach with a proposed merger of the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and PIF, but this vision never became reality.

The Quiet End

The decisive blows leading to its demise came gradually. In October 2023, the Official World Golf Ranking denied LIV the necessary points, which made it difficult for players to access Major tournaments and undermined the league's sporting legitimacy. Despite strong viewership in markets like Australia and South Africa, LIV never truly gained a foothold in the USA, neither on TV nor with sponsors. The death blow followed in April 2026: After estimates of over $5 billion, the Saudi PIF withdrew as a financier. Tournaments had to be canceled, unpaid bills piled up, and the DP World Tour announced it would exclude LIV players starting in 2027. A final rescue attempt in September 2026 under Chapter 11 with a player-owned 2027 league also failed when BC Partners withdrew a planned $300 million investment. Even players like Rahm and Lucas Herbert, who were once meant to strengthen LIV, were uncertain or gone.
