Lee Westwood: Unemployed – LIV Future Uncertain

“I’m currently unemployed,” this blunt announcement from Lee Westwood hit the golf world like a lightning strike on the tee and catapults the 53-year-old’s future into the spotlight. The former Ryder Cup captain stands at a crossroads: No contract for the supposed LIV Golf 2.0 in hand, and no firm commitment for a DP World Tour comeback in 2027. A true career enigma is unfolding.

The LIV empire itself resembles a disastrous bunker shot. After the Public Investment Fund withdrew its support and the league even filed for bankruptcy protection, its future hangs by a thread. A 2027 relaunch is being negotiated, but Westwood, who has been co-captain of Majesticks GC since 2022, finds the current offers anything but convincing. It seems a lot still needs to be "fine-tuned" before he commits again.

The DP World Tour as a Lifeline?

The clock is ticking for Westwood and his LIV colleagues. They must reapply for DP World Tour membership by November 16. Although he has already paid the fines for his LIV appearances, a return would be no walk in the park: A hefty ten-tournament ban awaits him. A true test that could significantly disrupt his 2027 season.

A Long Wait for Tee Time

This ban could mean that Westwood's first realistic DP World Tour event would only be the Turkish Airlines Open in the first week of May 2027. But even that is not a given. DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings has made it clear: anyone who opts for the new LIV format is out of the European circuit. A clear statement that presents golf professionals with a difficult choice. Westwood had once canceled his DP World Tour membership himself, and dialogue about a possible comeback with the Tour has been slow – if it exists at all. A true dilemma for a legend on the fringe of the green.
