Beau Hossler scorched the course with a sensational round at the start of the 2026 Wyndham Championship, grabbing the early lead with a 9-under-par 61 – all while under the pressure of likely needing a win to make it into the FedExCup Playoffs. What an opening, as if staying under par were the easiest thing in the world when the season is hanging by a thread! This round of 61, by the way, is already the 15th of its kind or better this 2026 PGA Tour season.
The spectacle was then interrupted by the weather; twelve golfers were still on the course when play was suspended. Play is scheduled to resume Friday at 8 AM ET (2 PM CEST) before the second round begins as planned. Until then, Hossler holds a confident lead, but the competition is hot on his heels.
The Chasers Close Behind
Right behind Hossler, Sahith Theegala and Ben James lurk, each with a 62 (-8), while Eric Cole is also off to a very strong start with a 63 (-7). A sextet is tied at 64 (-6), including Matti Schmid, who is showing that he can compete at the very top in this league. Also among them are Denny McCarthy, Davis Thompson, Hayden Springer, Doug Ghim, and Zach Bauchou.
Showdown on the Green
Hossler really turned it on at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, finishing strong with an eagle on the 15th hole and birdies that propelled him to that incredible 61. Billy Horschel also delivered a strong round, carding an eagle on the 15th as well. In contrast, Cameron Young, the defending champion, had a rather mixed start with a 71. The Wyndham Championship is the grand finale of the regular 2026 PGA Tour season; here, it will be decided who makes it into the Playoffs and who doesn't – pure drama!
