A 62 that rewrites the history books – Lucas Herbert unleashed an absolute wrecking ball at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale! The Ripper GC star delivered an out-of-this-world performance in Round 2, snatching the lead.
Herbert, who already triumphed at LIV Golf Virginia this year, posted a bogey-free 6-under 28 on the front nine. That's a Major Championship record for nine holes, golfers! He made the turn with six birdies and simply didn't let up until he carded an 8-under 62 – the lowest 18-hole round in Major history.
Record Chase at Royal Birkdale
This best score is now shared by six different players, achieved a total of seven times. Royal Birkdale seems to be a good place for such records: Southern Guards GC’s Branden Grace accomplished this feat here back in 2017, and on Friday, not only Herbert but also Sam Burns matched it with a 62.
The Chasers Lurk
Herbert now heads into Saturday with a two-shot lead. But the competition isn't sleeping: Crushers GC Captain Bryson DeChambeau is in fifth place, just three shots back. Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm and 4Aces GC’s Thomas Detry are also lurking in eighth, four shots away – things are really heating up on the green!
