The eagle on the 18th hole, which not only secured Darren Fichardt the victory but also a ticket to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, was the absolute highlight at the Simmons Bank Championship. What a finish on the green! The South African was neck and neck with Zach Johnson, but on the final tee shot, Fichardt made the difference, sinking the ball for an eagle and ruthlessly countering Johnson's birdie.
Fichardt delivered a truly impressive 8-under 64 on Sunday, finishing the tournament with an incredible 22-under par. Zach Johnson, who also shot a 64, finished just one shot behind at 21-under – a razor-thin lead created by that one magical shot. For Fichardt, this success was not only his first victory on the PGA Tour Champions but also confirmation of his playing status through 2027.
From the Brink to the Spotlight
The drama was unmatched. Before this week, Fichardt was at No. 46 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, far from qualifying. But with this stellar performance, he catapulted himself to 17th place, comfortably securing one of the coveted Top-36 spots for the season finale. His comeback began with an insane 11-under 61 in the second round, after starting with a 69 – he's really on a roll!
Phoenix Calls!
Now the journey continues to Phoenix Country Club, where the Charles Schwab Cup Championship will be held from November 12th to 15th. With his 17th place in the overall standings, Fichardt is perfectly positioned to be a serious contender there. Other golfers like Ricardo Gonzalez (from 40 to 31) and Bo Van Pelt (from 38 to 34) also secured their spots in the finale thanks to strong performances. We can look forward to some exciting rounds!
