DPWT: LIV Is, Was a Rival – 5-Year Battle Rages On

The DP World Tour has had enough of the wishy-washy talk: LIV Golf is fierce competition, and this battle has been raging for five years over every green, every sponsor, and every top talent. What looked like coexistence is turning out to be a permanent, strategic power struggle that is turning international professional golf upside down.

Ben Cowen, Chief Tournament and Operations Officer at the DP World Tour, doesn't mince words. "Without a doubt," Cowen states, "they were and are a competitor." No one is buying LIV's fairy tale about "completing" rather than "competing." The fight for events, venues, and partners, like for Valderrama back then, was just a skirmish in a larger war game.

EXCLUSIVE: DPWT speaks out about “frustrating threat” of LIV. “A constant battle for the last 5 years with [LIV] going after our events, and sponsors. They were and are a competitor. If they say they weren’t, that’s an interesting take on it.” https://t.co/bEtsjNYoIL

No Ceasefire in Sight

And the tone is getting tougher. After individual LIV players were allowed to tee off on both Tours under certain conditions until early 2026, the future looks bleak. A continuation of these "Conditional Releases" for 2027 is "highly unlikely"; the system will probably be shut down after five years of conflict. The DP World Tour makes it clear: Our ecosystem and our Tour DNA stand firm, global TV reach and junior development are running very strong.

The Battle for Golf's Future

This golfer war has been raging since LIV's launch in 2022. It's not just about birdies and balls, but about sheer power in professional golf. Who determines where the best play? Who holds the strings? The DP World Tour dismisses all LIV claims and makes the battle lines crystal clear again on September 18, 2026: Two giants are fighting for supremacy on the fairway. Flexibility for the players? Forget it!
