However, the start didn't look so rosy: Clark double-bogeyed his very first hole. But the U.S. Open champion showed nerves of steel, quickly recovered, and ignited a true fireworks display over the next eight holes with five birdies and an eagle. His round of 65 catapulted him to a strong 17 under par (193 strokes), five shots ahead of top pursuers Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay.

McIlroy himself also shot a 65 on Saturday, and Cantlay a 66, but the gap to Clark could not be significantly reduced. Gary Woodland, who was Clark's toughest pursuer after 36 holes, had to settle for a six-shot deficit by the end of the day. This is the second time this year that Clark goes into a final round with such a significant lead – the last time was at the U.S. Open, which he ultimately won.

Even before this incredible round, things were going very well for Clark: After 36 holes, he was bogey-free and led with 12 under par (128 strokes) thanks to two rounds of 64.
