Rules Bombshell! Cedric Gugler faces a 10-tournament suspension – and his reputation is on the line!
This is one tee shot that went truly awry! Swiss pro Cedric Gugler has committed a major blunder, which not only costs him ten HotelPlanner Tour tournaments but also severely damages his image. Things got serious in the European Tour Group's disciplinary proceedings!
The decision has been made, and the penalty is hefty: Gugler is suspended for the first 10 HotelPlanner Tour events of the 2026 season. This forced break kicks off with the SDC Open in South Africa on January 29th. But the financial aspect is only one side of the coin. What truly hurts is the dent this decision leaves in Gugler's reputation. His standing takes a significant hit here, golfers!
Let's take a look back: In 2025, Gugler made 18 starts on the HotelPlanner Tour, finishing 166th in the season's overall standings. No sensational rounds, to put it mildly. Prior to the incident in the Czech Republic, he had missed seven cuts in just 10 starts and earned just under $4,000 in prize money. So things hadn't been going smoothly for a while.
Yet, he also had those truly strong moments that cannot be taken away from him! While he has only been seen sporadically on the big stage of the DP World Tour, he showed what he's capable of at the 2024 Omega European Masters in his home country. As a sponsor invite, he secured a sensational 4th place! "That was the highlight of my career," Gugler said at the time. He raved: "I love playing in front of large crowds on the big stage; it makes me a stronger golfer." He continued: "It was so special to play on the DP World Tour, and I feel like I belong there in the future. My goal is to get there as quickly as possible." Big words, big ambitions!
All the more bitter is the current setback.
What happened, golf fans wonder? The European Tour Group has now released the full statement. According to it, Cedric Gugler was sanctioned for a breach of the code of conduct at a HotelPlanner Tour tournament. An independent disciplinary panel, which convened on November 3, 2025, found that Gugler failed to adhere to the standards of conduct and ethics expected of Tour members during the first round of the Raiffeisenbank Golf Challenge at Kaskada Golf Resort in the Czech Republic on June 12, 2025.
And here's the shocker: He was disqualified from the tournament for playing his ball from the wrong spot on the green MULTIPLE times! Multiple times, folks! Just imagine that. The independent disciplinary panel – consisting of Philip Evans KC, sports manager Ian Larsen, and Legends Tour member Markus Brier – classified Gugler's conduct as a serious breach of the code of conduct.
