Berger Takes Lead at Arnold Palmer: 'Unbelievable' 63!

DELOFTED – Your Golf Update

Berger Hits the Accelerator and Surges to the Top of the Arnold Palmer Invitational!

Folks, things really heated up on the green yesterday! Daniel Berger delivered a spectacular round – nine birdies, a flawless performance – soaring straight into the lead on day one of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida. And with a three-shot advantage!

The 32-year-old American, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour (his last victory was five years ago at Pebble Beach), grabbed three birdies on the front nine. But then he really hit the accelerator with six more birdies on the back nine. Our man immediately rattled off a string of three birdies on the 10th hole, as if it were nothing. This was followed by an 11-foot putt for a birdie on the par-3 14th, and then two more birdies on the 16th and 18th. The result? A sensational bogey-free round of 63! He's on fire!

Berger thus sits three shots ahead of newly crowned Pebble Beach Champion Collin Morikawa and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had to settle for a 70. And Rory McIlroy? He's famously preparing to defend his Masters title next month. He finished his erratic round, peppered with five birdies and a double bogey, at even par. There was still room for improvement there, Rory!

Berger, who had to take a three-month break last autumn due to a broken ring finger on his right hand (sustained during a shot at the BMW Championship in August), explained after his performance: "The most important thing for me is just to get back into my rhythm. When you come back, you just have to find your flow again and build your routine." He added: "I actually haven't been playing that badly; the results just haven't been there."

Incidentally, the broken finger wasn't Berger's first injury setback. He missed a full ten months in 2022 and 2023 due to back problems and struggled with consistency in 2024 after his comeback. A true comeback kid of golf! The native Floridian also predicted that conditions for the rest of the week at Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando would become "incredibly difficult and challenging." "You can already see the greens are almost white. A little wind, a bit less moisture, and it'll be like a US Open," he warned. "I think when you come to Bay Hill to play this event, you know what to expect. It doesn't shock me. You're ready for it." A clear statement!

Morikawa: Late Eagle Boost, Aberg "Unbelievable"

Collin Morikawa, a two-time Major winner and finally back in action after his victory at Pebble Beach in February, stepped up his game on the final holes to card a 6-under-par round. On the par-5 16th, he striped a perfectly struck 7-iron onto the green and then sank a 15-foot putt for an eagle.
