Folks, what a thrilling ride the PGA Championship at Aronimink is giving us this week! After the second round, we're looking at a leaderboard so surprising, it would make even meteorologists raise an eyebrow. Who would have thought we'd see two names at the top who usually stand in the shadow of the big names?
Maverick McNealy and Alex Smalley are sharing the halfway lead at 4-under-par. McNealy even briefly reached 6-under – the lowest mark of the tournament so far – before a few late mistakes dropped him back to 4-under. Smalley, on the other hand, showed true grit: After three consecutive bogeys, he rallied and finished his round with a 1-under 69. Truly impressive!
Rory in Attack Mode, Bryson's Tournament Over
While the newcomers are performing at the top, there was plenty of drama among the stars too. Rory McIlroy, who was on the brink after his opening round 74, delivered a stunning response. A bogey-free 67 catapulted him back into contention at 1-over-par, just five shots behind the leaders. He really got down to business on the greens for the Northern Irishman, who improved his first round by a full seven strokes!
Things went very differently for Bryson DeChambeau. The power-hitter unexpectedly had to pack his bags and missed the cut – a real surprise considering his recent Major form. Scottie Scheffler, on the other hand, who had started well, couldn't maintain his early momentum. He also sits at 1-over-par, five shots back in the middle of the pack, after failing to capitalize on par-5 opportunities and only managing three birdies.
Aronimink: The Unpredictable Course
The PGA Championship is back at Aronimink this year for the first time in 64 years, and it shows. The unpredictability of the course is creating a leaderboard filled with names you might not have immediately expected. Who will claim the title here on Sunday? The race is wide open, and the excitement is building immensely!
