Eight birdies in nine holes – this headline reads like it came straight out of a fantasy novel from the golf universe. But Allan Harrison, a 64-year-old club golfer with a 0.4 handicap, recently did exactly that on the greens of Fairhaven Golf Club. What England Golf estimates as a 1 in 322 billion chance is simply pure magic that even leaves professionals astonished.
At first, it looked anything but a record chase: Harrison bogeyed four holes on the first nine. But after a quick refreshment, a pasty and a drink, the veteran hit the turbo. Seven birdies in a row, eight birdies on the back nine – things really heated up on the green!
Like a Pro – Only Better
PGA Tour birdie leaders average 4.8 to 5.0 birdies per round. Harrison's streak is therefore not just brutally good for an amateur, but also compared to the absolute top players. Just last month, 18-year-old Australian Amelia Harris showed a similar performance with eight birdies in nine holes at the US Junior Tournament in North Carolina. A club golfer at this level? That's impressive!
A Legend on the Green
And whoever thought this story couldn't get any better didn't account for Allan Harrison's resume: This man once played foursomes with none other than Tommy Fleetwood at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club. Harrison almost even broke the record for nine consecutive birdies but fell one hole short – he had seven in a row. Nevertheless, his eight-in-nine streak remains an incredible achievement that will go down in the history books.
