Who would have thought it: Adam Scott, once the staunchest critic of a match play format for the Tour Championship final, is now the architect of the change. The Aussie star, who was firmly against this idea just over 20 months ago, is now actively helping to reshape the format starting in 2028. He sees match play as „exciting and relevant“ to elevate the season finale to a new level.
Back then, in late 2024, when the Tour was considering sweeping playoff changes, Scott strictly rejected match play. His argument was clear: an entire season played in stroke play should not end in a match play showdown. But times and opinions change – even at the highest level of golf.
From Critic to Advocate
Scott and his colleague, Player Director Keith Mitchell, have worked hard to make the concept palatable. He firmly believes that the Tour Championship, as a standalone match play event, has the potential to electrify the golf world. It is this change of heart that is making fans take notice.
A New Playoff Era?
Brian Rolapp, the PGA Tour Commissioner, already announced this match play direction in June at the Travelers Championship. Scott's public reversal as Player Director naturally carries significant weight. While the discussion about the format is still ongoing, Scott himself is still performing strongly in the FedEx Cup race this week at the BMW Championship. Life on Tour goes on – and soon, perhaps, with a healthy dose of match play madness.
