Presidents Cup: Justin Thomas shines, USA 3:2 up, Internationals struggle

Justin Thomas completely flipped the script at the Presidents Cup, putting the U.S. team in the lead on day one. With a performance that once again proved why he’s a true weapon in match play, he and rookie Jackson Koivun secured the first point, laying the groundwork for a narrow 3-2 lead after the fourball matches. The Internationals had chances, but the U.S. team held strong.

What JT delivered on the greens at Medinah was an absolute display of dominance against Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria, whom he and Koivun sent home with a 4-and-3 victory. Playing the best round of the day with 3.65 Strokes Gained, he practically carried his pairing single-handedly. This improves his Presidents Cup fourball record to an incredible 7-0-0 – a legend in the making. The 21-year-old rookie Jackson Koivun was also exceptionally strong by his side, enjoying a shining debut.

JT Makes the Difference

At the end of the first day of the 16th edition, the score stood at 3-2 in favor of the Americans. Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns also secured an important point, helping to overcome a tighter start than expected. Although the Internationals had opportunities to make the score more even, they couldn't capitalize on their chances – a narrative that, unfortunately, runs through many Presidents Cups. They “blew” their opportunity, according to the harsh analysis.

Day Two Strategy: Foursomes Await

The 16th edition of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club, where 15.5 points are needed for victory, is now fully underway. Brandt Snedeker for the USA and Geoff Ogilvy for the International Team have set their lineups for Friday's foursomes. This format is notoriously tougher than fourball – it will show whether the Internationals can close the gap or JT and Co. pull further ahead.
