PGA Tour Playoffs: 5 Who Still Beat Scheffler

The PGA Tour Playoffs were a Scheffler-fest, sure, but the real stories were often written outside the spotlight – because alongside superstar Scottie Scheffler, five other players secured victory in their own unique ways. While Scheffler dominated the FedEx Cup and the Tour Championship in 2026, becoming only the third player after Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to win this title multiple times, entirely different dramas unfolded in the background.

More Than Just the Trophy

A "victory" on Tour can mean so much more than just the trophy: a breakthrough, a career reset, or the tough securing of status. That's exactly what the 2026 Playoffs showed. Jackson Koivun, for example, beat Scheffler at the 3M Open, and according to experts, won't have to face the champion again until 2027. And Viktor Hovland? He had beaten Scheffler at the 2026 Travelers and was even leading on Sunday at the Tour Championship, before Scheffler cold-bloodedly overtook him, leaving Hovland "only" in second place. It was a finish that delivered pure emotion and showed how hard players fight at this level.

“In order to become really good at this game…” Even after winning his second Tour Championship, Scottie Scheffler remains fascinated by the endless pursuit of golf.

The Unsung Winners

Matt Fitzpatrick also triumphed over Scheffler at the 2026 RBC Heritage but couldn't quite maintain the pace in the Playoffs. Cameron Young achieved a win against the champ at the 2026 Cadillac, but afterwards couldn't find the necessary flow and finished T11 at the Tour Championship. Even Rory McIlroy, who kept Scheffler at bay at the 2026 Masters, started too far back in the final to become a real threat, finishing T4. Each of these players proved that while it's incredibly difficult to beat Scheffler, it's not impossible to create personal moments of brilliance.

The battle for the top 50 was another under-the-radar highlight. After the FedEx St. Jude Championship, it was all or nothing for many, as only the top 50 players advanced. Keith Mitchell narrowly missed out with a 51st-place finish, while Matt McCarty made the cut as the last player in. This type of "victory" – surviving the brutal cut – is just as crucial for many on Tour as a trophy. The 2026 Playoffs were therefore a clear statement: there are many paths to triumph, even when one player dominates the entire field.
