Joaquin Niemann has more than just a title in his sights at Valderrama this week – it's about a direct ticket to the major championship highlight at Royal Birkdale. The 2026 LIV Golf Korea champion is not only the player with the most individual wins in league history but also has his fate firmly in his own hands in the race for a spot at The Open Championship.
The coveted LIV Golf Open Championship qualification exemption goes to the top player in the season-long individual standings who is not yet qualified after this event. Niemann currently sits in third place with 334.86 points, just behind Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, who are already guaranteed a spot.
Niemann's Master Plan
With a significant 200 points awarded to the winner in Spain, the race is still open, but Niemann is the clear favourite to secure this spot. He himself remains calm: "This is just part of the process," he explained at Tuesday's press conference in Valderrama. "I'm fully focused on my shots and my feel for the course, the wind, the challenges this week – and then we'll see what happens."
The Final in His Own Hands
Should Niemann win the tournament, finish a strong second, or deliver another top result, the matter is practically decided. The only realistic scenario in which he would still lose the exemption would be a weak week in Spain combined with an absolutely stellar round from one of the contenders. The momentum is on his side, and he holds all the cards.
