Matt Fitzpatrick recently revealed he thought the now viral "Congrats" texts were from a "random guy" who simply "wasn't very good with his phone." Now we know: it's Tom Egbers.
It was Egbers who publicly shared screenshots of his congratulations on X, thus setting the whole thing in motion. The messages started as early as September 28, 2025. Fitzpatrick himself always replied politely, but also always questioningly. Variations like "Sorry, I'm not sure who this is" or "Who is this number, please?" regularly appeared.

Fitzpatrick admits he had been receiving the messages since 2025, but it wasn't until after several victories – including the RBC Heritage, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and his triumph at the 2026 Open de France – that it dawned on him there was a real pattern behind it. His fourth title of 2026 at the Open de France was then the trigger for the latest congratulation and renewed attention to the running gag.
Unexplained Phenomenon
Even when Fitzpatrick spoke about it, he apparently still didn't know the identity of the person behind the texts. The question marks were practically still written all over his face. It's quite a kicker that even a pro on the green has to live with an unsolved phone mystery for so long.
