LIV Demise: Rahm & Co. eye DP World & PGA Tour return?

It's over. LIV Golf, once such a daring project, has finally had the plug pulled. After Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) cut off funding and a "LIV 2.0" collapsed due to a lack of top-player commitment, the dream is shattered. In September 2026, LIV went bankrupt, and its remaining assets are now being liquidated.

This news hits like a driver shot off the tee and is shaking up the entire golf world order. The guys who once packed up their bags for LIV are now desperately looking for a way back to the established tours. It will be a wild time for professional golf, where the wheat will be separated from the chaff.

Back to the Old Greens?

For some stars, the return is already underway. Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sergio Garcia are poised to regain a foothold on the DP World Tour. While Rahm is firmly planning for 2027, he could also target an earlier PGA Tour move, should a similar offer to Brooks Koepka's emerge. Koepka has already fought his way back to the PGA Tour, albeit with financial penalties. Patrick Reed, in turn, is targeting a PGA Tour return for 2027 via his performance in Europe. The DP World Tour has made it crystal clear to the guys: Anyone who had committed to a planned LIV season in 2027 is out of contention for DP World Tour membership – with direct implications for the Ryder Cup.

No Automatic Return

DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings makes it clear: The returnees will be treated fairly and based on merit, not rewarded with unlimited access. This means invitations might initially go out for smaller events between February and August 2027, when most top players are teeing off in the US. Even Rory McIlroy, who once accused LIV of trying to destroy the European Tour, supports the reinstatement of the ex-LIV players. But it won't be a walk in the park for everyone: An automatic PGA Tour return is out of the question. Players like Bryson DeChambeau, whose status is still uncertain, will have to fight hard for their return. It's a real drama unfolding here on the green, golfers. The next few months will be truly exciting!
