Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial, and it has caused quite a stir. His last-minute scratch suddenly shrank the field to 132 players, which likely caused frustration for at least two other guys who suddenly lost their spots. A move that packs a punch.
Just recently, Koepka had a very strong T14 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, finishing a solid 18-under par. A result that propelled him to 63rd place in the FedEx Cup Standings. Officially, no reason was given for the withdrawal, but insiders are buzzing about a planned break.
Koepka Takes a Break
After three consecutive weeks on the course, Brooks seems to be taking some time off. No injury, no crisis – simply schedule management to stay fit for the major tournaments. The Tour confirmed his withdrawal late Sunday evening or Monday morning. One thing is clear: He is not eligible for next week's Memorial Tournament, as he hasn't made the cut via either the Aon Swing 5 or the Aon Next 10.
Looking Ahead
But fans can breathe a sigh of relief: no extended break is planned. Koepka is expected to compete again at the RBC Canadian Open before the ultimate highlight, the U.S. Open, calls. He is deliberately keeping his schedule a bit lighter, but his recent form shows that he is still fully in contention when it comes to major titles.
Even though Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth weren't even at Colonial, Koepka's departure shows how quickly the dynamics on the Tour can change.
