The golf world is abuzz, and Lucas Herbert is wading into the scene's hottest debate: the return of LIV players to the DP World Tour. He understands the frustration of many current Tour members who fear for their starting spots and status, and considers the matter truly complex. Herbert expects the next twelve months on the course to provide plenty of discussion.
When asked about the resentment towards the returning LIV guys, Herbert emphasized that he's staying out of the direct dispute but can "empathize with both sides." He clearly admitted that current DP World Tour players could lose tournament spots or even their status if the ex-LIV golfers return. His own plan is set: No LIV Golf 2.0 season. Instead, he aims to return to the DP World Tour in 2027, with the long-term goal of qualifying for the PGA Tour in 2028.
Why Herbert Is Turning His Back on LIV
One might think the worst – but Herbert's departure from LIV is not without reason. He criticized that the planned LIV calendar with only 10 events was not enough to properly build a season or secure sufficient access to Major Championships. The quality of the fields and locations also didn't always convince him. Despite the initially more relaxed-sounding LIV format with three days and 14 events, the long-haul travel in 2026 caused constant fatigue and made staying in touch with family a hurdle. That's not how it works.
Between Triumph and Uncertainty
Herbert was not idle on LIV in 2026: He claimed victory twice and finished sixth at The Open, after sharing the lead at the halfway mark. A sensational round! This underscores his desire to capitalize on as many Major opportunities as possible. However, his return to the DP World Tour depends on the Tour's process, which accepts applications until November 16. Guy Kinnings, CEO of the DP World Tour, has made it clear that LIV 2.0 players will not automatically get a spot. The pendulum swings wildly, golfers.
